What determines the power of a mage?

Hi! It’s me again. In my attempts to combat lust, I’ve tried a lot of things and reflected on what works and what doesn’t, including this post.

The main question is: what makes one spell stronger than another, one mage stronger than another? Why can two people do the same thing but get different results?

You can say that these are some Objects, rituals, altars, symbols, words, amulets, potions… but it is constantly mentioned on the forum that all we need for magic is our mind.
In the Draconian Ritual Book by Asenath Mason, in the section “Personal Temple,” it is written that all of these are just tools to help you tune in to the work, but are not necessary for the result.
Plus, magic can be “pronounced” in different languages and is not tied to a specific one.
So I conclude that it is not material objects and specific ritual actions that make our magic stronger.

And as I discussed earlier in another post:

But they don’t. So faith and intention are not the answer.

I’ve read in other threads that emotions and feelings give magic its power. But is that true? Does this mean that it is impossible to do anything related to magic in a state of calm? I am sure that many monks, priests and yogis prioritize a state of peace rather than intense feelings. So that’s probably not the answer either…

Using someone else’s power? Calling on some spirits for help? Perhaps, but that would mean we’re completely powerless and only capable of calling on others.

Perception and concentration?
By paying attention to a sense organ, we intensify the sensations it perceives. This is simply a psychological fact. Moreover, this is what training the astral senses, Clair senses, comes down to.
Concentration is the ability to hold our attention on something. This is certainly an important quality for absolutely any activity performed by the mind.
But does it enhance our spells, invocations, energy, astral senses? idk

Energy work? I also think it’s all simply tied to the perception of sensations. Some meditate on the seven chakras, others use more advanced or entirely different systems, some on the astral body, and so on. Some simply use visualization, supposedly channeling energy in this way. There are many different methods and their descriptions, but they all have one thing in common - directing attention to something that can evoke sensations… or rather, we begin to feel something better.

So, what should we do to become more powerful in magic? What’s truly important, and what’s just a matter of preference?

Being a late 50s bi single, childless, never married male, while I have my hot moments, lust isn’t a thing or even an interest.

That out of the way, my personal focus is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and it’s cross transference into the definition of magic.

This being my start I go back to ancient civilizations when magic was real without television or radio, and why their magic worked. Not even necessarily Egypt, as several civilizations existed before Egypt.

Continents even.

I digress. What makes one mage more powerful than another?

Dedication, drive, devotion. Perfect persistent practice.

In my opinion, belief systems. Or your own BS for short.

This is twofold.

  1. Know yourself, know why you think you’re weak, what skills you have, what to improve, and what is wasting your time, why you want “power” and what that even means at the deepest levels.
  2. Having identified what’s real and what’s time-wasting, cleanse yourself of the dross and grunge of your bs, learn and build skills with practice.

So, what is the true purpose of measuring a mage’s power to you?

To me, the answer is simple: How can I ensure every ritual I perform succeeds and delivers the exact results I desire?

I believe a mage’s power consists of two parts: Internal and External. Internal power involves your physical energy, mental focus, and belief… —the things we can consciously control. External power includes your environment, education, culture, and genetics… These are things that can both influence our internal state and, at the same time, not care much about who we are or what we are trying to change using magick (which is probably why magick that affects reality outside of ourselves is so elusive and difficult to succeed in :)))

You are right about belief and energy. At its core, a ritual is the process of using belief and focus to generate the energy required to manifest a desire. If you’ve tried everything and failed, many things could be at play. However, my guess is that your belief and energy simply weren’t strong enough to shift the specific reality you were targeting.

Magick, in this sense, is like mathematics or a credit card. A strong enough ritual—or a strong enough mage—must be able to ‘pay’ the required energy price. Finding $50 on the street might cost 15 minutes of prayer for three days. But buying a million-dollar apartment? That might require twenty years of building a deep relationship with spirits. Most people would quit in the first week.

If your belief is intense, your energy is focused, and nothing seems to be blocking you, yet the result is nowhere to be found, it’s because that reality requires a higher ‘fee’ than you’ve provided. There are more barriers than we can see, and magick needs a ‘toll’ to pass through those gates. Every time we doubt or slack off, our power drops. When results don’t manifest, we lose faith and slip back into old habits.

This is why the most cliché advice is also the most vital: start small. Break a large desire into achievable steps. If you haven’t tried this yet, consider targeting incremental goals to build your momentum toward a big win.

Ultimately, it’s hard to know why a ritual works for one person and fails for another because we lack the full context. We don’t know their internal or external struggles—what distracts them, what blocks their belief, or what crucial detail they missed. All rituals should be viewed as references. Seeing someone else succeed is positive because it builds hope, but whether it worked for them is less important than finding what works for you.

Keep practicing and find your own magick. Have a great day!

I appreciate your offer, especially since you’re the one who reminds me of it and doesn’t just disappear. But I feel like I’m to blame for what’s happening, and it’s my duty to learn to deal with these kinds of problems myself so I can become stronger.

But, again, thank you!

Wow, that’s a cool answer.

“generate the energy” you said… Does this mean that the more we believe and the more we focus, the more energy we generate?

So, magical processes require certain resources from the magician, and this resource is “energy”?

If faith influences the size of our energy, then the stronger we believe, the more energy and the more significant magical processes we can carry out… But then we again run into the fact that any fanatic would work miracles… but they don’t.

But I want to say that I really like your answer! There are many important points and clarifications. I especially liked the idea that we “pay” with a certain amount of energy that is necessary to carry out the intention. This seems quite logical.

But then… what is energy? Although it’s not so important, let’s say it’s some kind of “resource” that we use. So what really matters is how do we increase the amount of this resource that we can have, or how do we increase the amount of energy that we not only have, but can use?

Faith, one of the answers.
But that’s clearly not the only thing. How can we increase our energy? And does it lie within us, or do we always take it from somewhere? So many questions, forgive me…

I only know that Eastern practices are aimed at increasing this resource. Magic and abilities are just a by-product for them. So you can just turn to one of the classic schools.

Qigong, Tai Chi, Yoga? There’s a ton of junk out there right now, and it’s hard to find reliable information about the magic and energy in these areas, rather than just a list of fitness exercises.

But I would be glad if someone sent me something specific and said, “Do this.”

Unfortunately, I only know the materials in my native language. But it seems that one of the moderators was engaged in these systems, I remember reading somewhere.

Although it seems to me that if you look for the manuals and read who their author is, you will be able to identify which of them belongs to the classics, without an impurity. I suspect that all this is quite accessible.

Oh, then I’ll write you a selection in private messages👌

What @Mulberry said, with the addition. How much discipline and devotion goes into your craft. There will always be people where it comes easy and some that really have to work for it. In either case, it’s a skill and regular, disciplined practice makes all the difference.

Oooh, and try out different systems. What works for some, can do F all for another.

Yes exactly. ^

Hano_orange also included what I was getting at, which I think is the bigger issue in this case.

Everything is energy. We are electromagnetic beings so the format of that energy is mainly electromagnetism, or EM for short.

Imagine filling a room with light. The color of the light is the frequency, and how bright it is is called the amplitude. If you want a color in the room replaced with your color, you have to make your light brighter to drown out the dimmer color. And you have to do it for long enough for it to stay any not return to the unwanted color. A powerful lamp will wash out a dim one.

So if the power of an EM wave is measured by it’s amplitude. If you supply a higher amplitude of your energy towards a situation to change it - higher than the energy of all the people expecting something different - and for long enough, then it will change.

However, now imagine that room lap is not clear and steady, it’s not one color but keeps changing to other colors - this is analogous to inconsistent and confused intent, and it has less effect on the other color in the room, no staying power, and might just steady out to the wrong color than what you wanted entirely.

So one of the greatest barriers to a mage putting out consistent and high amplitude energy towards a result, is thier own inner conflicts, before you even get to finding out if the output was string enough to override the ambient energy in the situation.

Depending on the working, and especially if there’s no other people involved, the ambient energy is not that great. And in this case the mage himself IS the barrier.

About this bit:

Well if you’re going to tiktok for your info that would be “junky” yes. Otherwise, no not really. These are ancient systems - over 10,000 years old - read the classics and listen from people who have achieved recognition for walking their talk in these communities. Actual books not short-attention-span social media clickbait.

We have a bunch of book recommendations specifically for qigong here: Unofficial Tutorials: Book Recommendations Collection - #19 by Mulberry

I don’t know about yoga but you want to look into “tantra” and the breathing exercises.

These are foundational and cannot be dismissed. You have to prepare your body for the energy work as the two are interlinked Like trying to lift 400lb in your first day in the gym, just jumping in to advanced energy work without being fit first is likely to cause injury

Congradulatioins. You’ve begun to ask questions that will DeBunk 99% as BS.

  • Intention: Its still important. The answer is Multi-Pronged.
  • Faith: Also important. Not necessarily about Religion.. but if you do not believe then you cannot really truly begin to Intend.

This is the most likely reason. Most peoples methods around here involve this.

  1. Faith - this is the foundational structure needed to perform magick. It involves all the elements needed to do magick. It is sort of Passive.. unless you Reinforce it actively.

  2. Intention - This is Active use of Ones Emotions+Thought. Emotions is just a less dense version of WILL (life force) energy. Thoughts are a singular aspect of or the informational program of Faith (which can consist of anything).

  3. WILL - This precedes intention. Its basically ones Root Chakra Power or Raw Nature. You can recapitulate your WILL by reclaiming your Sexual Power and not focusing it outside of yourself. True Will is when you have taken your Base Energy and Pinned it on a Higher Purpose.. like having a Doctrine.. Making a Covenant.. Having ones own Spiritual “Constitution” or sacred code of Ethics. This means having True Will is a laser sharp focus of ones Purpose in Life and it makes it difficult to divert you on a Path. This is basically your unprogrammed or programmed life force.

  4. Will empowers Intention. Faith is the “informational program” of the Life Force.

  5. To become more powerful.. know yourself and clean up your Psychology.

  6. Become more Cohesive in your Purpose.

Just as every person is truly unique, so is their form of spirituality. Indeed, there are bigger and smaller spiritual currents in the world. The Abrahamic current is a massive spiritual titan because of the whole planet feeding energy into it. But that doesn’t mean every person who uses it is going to be monstrously powerful. The ways they utilize it, channel it, perceive the world through it, the technical skills of their practice – there are too many factors to just say, “someone is more powerful than the other”.

Just like warfare, you don’t need to be a big badass to kill. There are women and children who fight wars in the world. No one is untouchable, and all it takes is some willpower, know-how, and some unanticipated tricks up your sleeve. Same goes for magick.

I can’t decide where to put this. Recent communication with Ba’al.

So, the day of the big document drop, you know which one, my son and I were commenting on them while driving. Suddenly, I felt the very strong, very angry presence of Ba’al. Ba’al, to summarize, doesn’t like super traumatized children dumped into his dimension. Every time I communicated ‘children’, he would correct me and insert ‘traumatized,’ like villain-origin-story-traumatized. I could say he’s on a literal witch hunt. He also said, what is the point of such a large, cruel rituals when a few smaller rituals would add up to the same effect.

My notes from our conversation: “This isn’t the only way to get power“ - choosing the hardest and most destructive way to achieve a set goal due entirely to selfishness and psychopathy. - can offer your own blood for instance. Is it better to have one giant ritual or multiple smaller, safer rituals that amount to the same thing?
