If you want to know my two cents on it, I believe it’s generally a sign of admiration, and a representation of your dedication to, and relationship with, the spirit in question.

It may also be part of an invocation or (even permanent… it’s nice how one could theoretically choose to become the incarnation of whosoever) possession working.
