"OP Hasn't Posted in a While" - How to Avoid Necroing a Thread

So you come across a thread that interests you, only to post in it and find out that OP has posted in the forums in a while and most likely will not see your response, which then leads the mods to close the thread. The act of posting in a thread that has not seen replies in a while is often called “necroing” - yes, it’s named after necromancy. Some forums have rules against necroing, but BALG doesn’t seem to be one of those forums. However, it can be rather annoying to put in effort into a reply only to find it was a waste of time.

So…

But how does one stop? How do you know that what you’re posting in isn’t going to get a response?

Well, I’m here to give you a tutorial on what to look for before posting.

I’ll be using this thread as an example: Dantalion tips (and everything that you need to know about him)

Step 1: Look at the date that the thread was created

One the upper right hand corner of each post is the date in which it was posted (or at least, an approximation). It’s important to remember that the older a thread is, the less likely that the OP will respond to it.

Step 2: Click on the OP’s username

ThreadTutorial2

You can click on the OP’s name to see some of their stats. Let’s see what Sha has been up to.

On the far left underneath the OP’s name is when they last posted. Sha has not posted since 2020, meaning they’re likely not very active on the forums anymore. Thus posting in their thread isn’t really worth it, since they would likely not see your comment.

Another thing to watch out for are red letters, which indicate that OP had their account suspended or closed.

ThreadTutorial4

If OP’s date of last post doesn’t tell you that they’re not going to respond, then the fact that their account is suspended or closed should.

So what should you do if someone else necros a thread where the OP isn’t going to respond? It’s quite simple, actually. Just write a response that says OP is most likely not going to see the response, then summon the mods to close out the thread if needed.

I hope this tutorial has been useful.

Right. Necroposting is generally encouraged when it adds to the conversation for sure… We leave those to continue.

Yes, if the new post is asking the OP for more information, or responding directly to the OP but not adding anything that hasn’t already been said, that’s when people can get disappointed and the thread being bumped can annoy people because there’s nothing new content wise.

From a moderation perspective the focus here is to keep the forum tidy, easier to use than if we left it to sprawl, and try not to let people feel ignored. So we take these on a case by case basis and let people know, close the thread if it’s run it’s course, and/or point people to the info they are asking for if we have it. :+1:

FYI, sadly the @moderators group mention doesn’t give anyone any notifications (used to, but it stopped doing that last year at some point), but if you use @ with a name it will work. Feel free to ping Mulberry, DarkestKnight, A_Pariah or Keteriya or anyone with TL4 (Leader) and above and they can close the thread, you can PM @moderators though.

And to add another tip: if you click that avatar it will tell you the last date they were seen (meaning when they last logged in) which could show they’re around even if they’re not posting.

Great post! Thanks for helping us know what’s what.

The person who originated the thread may not response but reviving the thread may make someone else to see it who might have a good answer.
