Jason Miller 'Getting to know the locals'

Anyone know what he means by this?

He means taking the time to introduce yourself to the land spirits of the area you live in. Every place has its elementals and genius loci so he recommends being a good neighbour and reaching out to say hello.

Where do they reside exactly?

They’re all around you, in the trees, and the earth and the sky. If you invite them in with offerings, they will come. Miller has a feast of offering ritual in his Sorcerer’s Secrets book in which you light some incense and invite every spirit you know and don’t know over to partake. It’s a way of both thanking those you work with and introducing yourself to those you don’t. You can make both a personal invitation and a general one. When I performed it, after naming the specific spirits I was working with at the time, I would then say, “spirits of the earth, air, water and sky,” for example.

Your local spirits can be valuable allies. They can help you find a new home, a job, protect you, basically anything that takes place within their locality.

Yeah I’ve heard about these local Land-based Spirits. In Sonia Choquette’s Ask Your Guides book they are known as ‘Runners’. They act like our scouts. Ask politely and they can find you what you need. Practical needs, bargains, parking spaces, seats in busy restaurants and so on.

Some land spirits can be exceptionally powerful and if you offend them, they can ruin you. That’s why it is always a good idea to be on good terms with them, and make amends if you anger them.

Who offends a Land Spirit?

Humans do it all the time, from littering to smashing up their homes or places they are attached to, we disrupt the land without consideration most of the time, think about it and try to put yourself in their shoes.

I suspect that these Spirits like us to ‘buy local’. I’m not saying they’re anti big supermarket chains but they appreciate buying things at the village store now and again?

Well, you’re moving into their neighborhood so it’s not so much as “buy local” than getting to know who’s living next to you in case you need something.

In his book Nei Kung, the author Kostas Danaos talks about how, when he was meditating in a forest clearing, he was approached by an earth elemental who wanted to know why humans were dynamiting his home. Kostas respectfully addressed the elemental as the “king of the mountain” and told him that most humans weren’t aware of him, and the elemental was shocked that they “had been forgotten.” He then called the author a shaman and said he was welcome there.

The Locals?

Its anything from Elemental Spirits to Human Spirits.

In my home city I am conjuring the “Water Elementals” to wash away all the Riff Raff trashing my city    i.e. But yes… people are Elemental Systems, mostly Water and Earth with a spark of Fire.

How do you filter the party? You only want helpful ones presumably?

Is this what Jim Morrison meant by a Feast of Friends I wonder?

You don’t “filter” anything. There’s no need to. It’s an open invitation.

Local spirits are a very large topic people tend to diminish.

There are a lot of spirits who will answer and they come in a lot of shapes and intelligences.

Elementals, ancestors, local guardians, maybe some old dieties depending on the place, directional angels, also fae folks, plant spirits…

The idea is getting along with them so you can work with them for many topics : health, local opportunies, wealth…

However… There are things to consider : most of those spirits need time/work/ritual/spirit contact to develop a relationship with. If you are in a place where aninism was/is huge, it will be easier. Same if there are evidence of worship to some pre christian dieties or just local folklore about fae folks. Otherwise, you might have to “awake” those beings so they develop a stronger bond to you and being responsive.

How do you communicate with them? How often? Presumably you actually go out into the wild or at least outside and literally talk out-loud to them?

Yeah basically. You dont need seals etc. They are here so you have to talk and let your senses bring the conversations.

Do you go into a forest? To a beach ? Into your garden if you have one?

Watch Princess Mononoke. It’s basically about offending Land Spirits. You’ll actually learn a lot.

This.

Good film - on this note also read the Findhorn story and check out Machale Small Wright’s work. They are geared towards working proactively with the nature spirits for growing a garden but the principle applies.

In forests and beaches and deserts? What about instructions to change or rearrange things out there? Working with 'devas; and the like who need you to do little tasks?
