If you don’r have astral senses properly developed, you only feel some small change of atmosphere during this gaze sigil method. And you won’t be able to communicate with entity, you’re conjuring.

Yes it’s fine without an altar. If you feel you personally would like to have one, it can be as simple as a shelf, a small space on a drawer, or you can make an astral temple (which you should be able to look up information on this form).
