Can anyone link me to esources that say he was a Caananite? When I research about this I only find stuff about YHWH not being a past pagan god.
He’s a bit older but the Canaanites really ran with the idea.
This historian and scholar explains it in detail (sources are cited):
How did a warrior-storm god become Yahweh, the god of world Abrahamic monotheism? By tracing the earliest history of Yahweh (“The One Exists”) to his origins in the area around Mt Seir to his immigration during the Bronze Age Collapse to the Judea Highlands around Shiloh, this episode explores the early history of the Israelite God. How did Yahweh and his Yahwism transform in theater of Canaanite religion - dominated by El, Ba’al, Asherah, Anat and other myth figures? What aspects of local religion did the Yahwists assimilate, reject and contend over in that process? This episode explore the early history of Yahweh and the rise of Yahweh henotheism/monolatry and primitive monotheism.
Edit to add: the use of the bible as “proof” is a fallacy because not all (or most) of it’s versions are accurately translated or transcribed. This is why the above-linked argument at gotanswers looks like it’s largely religious dogma, only using the bible as a source: which is inaccurate, not secular history, and there’s a big difference in rigor and analysis between the two.
Religious people believe and don’t want to question, they don’t like that as they identify with the ideas and to question means they have to question their core beliefs which is painful… secular scholars do not attach to the ideas, they question, form hypotheses and can change their minds based on new information to get the most accurate depiction wherever possible, and are ok being when they are speculating (and understand the difference).
I think as occultists it’s worth being very clear-headed on what kind of person is giving the info when you get it: secular and truthful or religious hopium. That tells you if it’s an emotional belief or real, or both.
It’s worth watching this explanation of bible accuracy to know exactly why preaching the bible is not a valid argument for historical fact (it will only tell you what the perosnal current religion considers canon):
Thank you. This topic has been on my mind these days.
Scholars do not know where he originated though the prevailing theory is the “Kenite hypothesis,” which posits that his worship was brought to Canaan via nomadic traders.
