Hello Everyone! I Was Wondering…Does Anyone On This Forum Know Any Old Norse/Viking Chants Other Than Runes?
This isn’t really known. Not much is preserved from the Norse as it’s not an unbroken tradition but “reconstructed”. We don’t know much about what they actually did or how. I’m not aware that “chants” were used at all - we might guess that they used them but we don’t know.
Norse religion was destroyed by Christianity, on purpose, and it was an aural tradition so anything written was written by outsiders, with the aural tradition broken so that for centuries no-one alive practiced it, and it’s a tad difficult to piece together from an incomplete history.
The author Snorri Sturlson wrote The Prose Edda, which has some poems, though construed from a Christian perspective.
Another is The Poetic Edda - a complication of poems about the Norse Gods and Heroes.
The poem called the Havamal has authentic info in it.
About the havamal:
Also look for poems in the Icelandic Galdrabok, which is from 1000 years later but commonly used for Norse seidr.
For rhythmic music bands like Skald and Heilung sing in old Norse languages and will get you something you can use to get into trance. Look for other bands in the “pagan folk” genre.
Runes are not “chants”. They are a symbolic alphabet which also have deep meaning in each rune.
I know but they used to chant them
My favorites our danheim (And Sagason but he does vocals he doesn’t say actual words) I’ve been listening to them since I was 16
Galdr
They are NOT chants any more than the Roman Alphabet is “a chant”. They can be chanted, but that’s not the same thing. You can sing your ABCs too.
In that case you can go ahead and chant the futhark, you can chant anything you want.
The Song Run by Skald does exactly this.
