I figured I would ask before diving into anything, as I just finally picked back up on my practicing and have more free time to learn and study more. But my current question is, is there a general way to identify the entity or spirit you would be evoking to be sure it is not an imposter of some sort?
Yes, call them by invitation only and then use verification to make sure you got who you asked for and not an impostor. Link for one way to do that is below.
Anybody not invited is suspect and cannot be identified or trusted. Never just assume a being is “more powerful” or “knows more” or “knows better” than you - they don’t - never give your power away.
At best you can get UPG (Unverified Personal Gnosis) that you can individually choose whether to trust it or not, but there’s zero guarantees. You can always ask for signs and omens for an invite, and then you can accept the invite with clear, invited contact from your side.
After that, if you have chosen to trust a “random”, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” - if you get results, great, you got lucky… if you get sick, you got a parasite. Imo, the risk of harm is simply not worth it. The volume of parasites is in the trillions and more, the number of real, high beings imposing themselves is practically nil. Higher beings respect free will. Lesser entities do not.
So lets say you have UPG that idk, Lucifer, is inviting you to contact him via a sudden presence. Banish and cleanse, get you and your space clean, get back to your baseline energy first, and THEN run a deliberate ritual to call Lucifer, ask if that was him and go from there.

I greatly appreciate the help, Though in my past UPG never let me down, I was still naive then and never thought that you had to check that stuff. Somehow back then there was no problem but I surely won’t tempt fate like that anymore. Again thank you for the wisdom as well as the link, I will do my best to prepare and protect myself beforehand.
Entities and imposters may be egregores (usually of your own creation or sourced from the collective unconscious), or beings bound to the astral plane. In my experience, demons have sent their familiars to represent them. So firstly, try to identify any desires or fears that you have – particularly egoic and lustful ones, as well as insecurities; assuming these themes are overly prominent in the evocation itself, there may be a chance of an imposter or an egregore. Evocation is more reliable than invocation since invocation increases the likelihood of communicating with unconscious or astral forces. Try to clear your mind beforehand. Research on the appearance, nature, and associations of the spirit. If a supposedly malevolent spirit is oddly very “nice,” or a benevolent spirit is more “vicious,” then there is a possibility of dealing with an artificial being.
