How can I create a symbol for an entity—such as a god, a demon, or a nature spirit (let’s say Zeus, just as a random example)—that doesn’t already have one? Would writing the name “Zeus” and transforming it into a symbol using Chaos Magick techniques achieve this? Are there other methods? I haven’t been able to find clear information on this specific aspect, as Chaos Magick generally focuses on intent and results. Or should I channel the entity’s energy and ask the entity itself to provide a sigil? Could you enlighten me on this matter?
This would be my preferred method, but a lot of people use a sigil generator such as the Rose Cross, and if you google “sigil generator” you can actually find several online where you just type in the name and it creates a sigil for you.
To be honest, these off-the-shelf methods—especially those of Abrahamic origin or derived from that tradition—don’t quite sit right with me. For instance, if I were to intend to make contact with Hecate and translate that intention into a symbol—creating a sigil that embodies the concept “I want to communicate with Hecate”—would that be a valid approach in terms of Chaos Magic techniques? Or, if I were to construct a symbol based directly on elements associated with her, would that sigil actually work? I am a bit hesitant to use sigils found online or created by others; therefore, I want to create my own sigils for the entities I wish to work with. However, I haven’t been able to find a clear resource explaining how to do this, so I am asking for a detailed explanation.
Then why do you want a sigil at all?
Sigils come from the European medieval monastic tradition informed by kabbalah. They are 100% abrahamic in nature.
Hecate or any god really predates this, which is why they have no sigils. (or enns) and you can use thier name the way thier followers did.
There isn’t one that I’m aware of. Learn to communicate with entries and ask them to provide you with a symbol, glyph or whatever suits you.
The triple moon symbol for Hecate is also a more modern invention, by the way, I do not suggest that either. Write the name in Greek maybe. ![]()
Since I do not belong to an Abrahamic tradition, I hesitate to use practices that originate from or belong to one; however, I had thought that a sigil—even a traditional one—could perhaps be reinterpreted entirely through the lens of chaos magic. The question I cannot quite grasp—and on which I seek insight from everyone here—is this: how does one evoke an entity that does not possess a specific sigil? Hecate was merely an example here; she lacks an ancient sigil, so I wonder if a simple invocation is sufficient to summon her. I struggle to sense the energies of entities that lack sigils, and I find myself at a loss regarding how to proceed; that aside, thank you for your answer.
For instance, when working with the Goetia or a specific demon, I know exactly what to do and how to conduct the process—I can feel their energies; however, when I attempt to summon an entity I know nothing about—and which has no associated symbols—I find myself wondering, “So, what am I supposed to do now?” Let me give you an example based on my own direct goals: if you wanted to summon Loki, what path would you follow? Would you carve his name somewhere in runes, or would you transform it into a symbol?
I think this is a good attitude, that as you are the Operator, you are in full control of your energy and how you manage it and what tools you use.
At that rate, using a sigil generator makes just as little difference as using a premade sigil.
The advantage - but can be a disadvantage - of using someone else’s premade sigil is that you can pick up those people’s psychic impressions of the work. For centuries-old sigils there’s so many people involved in the collective unconscious it doesn’t seem to cause any issues, and you get who you came for. But for modern - as in, a new sigil for Hecate say, made in the last few years and posted online, I personally wouldn’t use that, as I don’t want that creators energy that comes with it.
I think so - except maybe switch up the “want” part to “can” - like attracts like - if you put out want you can just get back more wanting.
I’m not sure you need the extra steps, but you can make any sigil you like. A dot would do it. The letter H would be fine, a sigil generator would be fine - it doesn’t matter really - it’s your choice and how you use it is your choice, so pick something the you LIKE, so that your energy will be attracted to it and flow smoothly without any nagging resistance from something you don’t like about it.
You do have a symbol though. The word “Hecate” itself is a symbol. Just because the Roman letters are not a kanji or a hieroglyph doesn’t make it any less usable as a symbol. - Only your mind makes that happen.
In this example, writing wouldn’t be appropriate - the Norse system as entirely aural, so i would call his name using voice.
I’m not sure the ancient Greeks could afford to use paper like that either. WE are very visual partly because writing is how we use the Internet a lot, but the ancients were not - they used songs, hymns, chants, voice and intention in thier shrines and temples. So if you want to contact the way they used to in the temples, then maybe a nice statuette with song and vocal calls is the way to go.
One strategy you could try is to first make a sigil using the chaos magick method. Use that sigil for your workings, and when you have made enough contact to channel a sigil then get a new one directly from the god.
