I’ve studied more about the huli jing than I did with the kistune, but I would like to learn both if possible.

As far as I know, which isn’t a lot, the lore around these is all about interacting with them, so to my mind that is similar to interacting with the fae or djinn. You can make a relationship where they help you but its not usurious like say, modern western necromancy attempts to be.
Mostly the lore is about how not to get on their bad side. If I were to approach this, I think the best bet is to find an actual fox spirit, and ask it to teach you what’s real.
Some stories talk about how the spirit used to be a human magickian, usually a woman, who after decades of study became an immortal fox spirit. In this case, it’s a start from the beginning and work on magick basics while you research the magick of these women. Whatever they knew is what you want to know, and the fox aspect seems more like a side affect than the flavour of the magick.
