Hi, I have the question you can read in the title. I am working on my chakras and it would be really helpful to recite mantras, but I can’t because I keep my practice secret and other people live with me. Will they be just as effective if I recite them mentally?
Not really. Mantras rely on the sound vibration in your body created by your breath and voice creating energy of a specific frequency. which is meant to encourage your brain to resonate at that same frequency. You can try using headphines and intention alone, but the effect is severely lessened.
You’d be better off with a technology designed to work with headphones like binuaural beats, the stuff from the Monroe Institute, guided meditations etc in your native language.
i would disagree. serious practicioners at a yogic level repeat mantra mentally to not disturb others meditation. I have found even listening helps. i keep a mantra for kundalini on loop and it has helped quadruple my magickal power over the course of a couple of months. the constant influx of energy was intense at first but then my body adjusted to it
That’s not what the OP asked though is it? If he was at this level he didn’t need to ask this question in the first place.
Ergo, when he asked “Will they be just as effective if I recite them mentally?”
… without years of practice to get this energy embedded into automatic reflexes, the answer is still no.
I didn’t say it was totally useless, I just think there are better methods for use with headphones to get more benefit for the time involved. Like I said:
In my experience it does and does very well. It is one of the potent ways to do matras. But there’s a sort of catch to it…
The question is not if it would work. But can you do it effectively?
To do it in while Ur getting along with Ur days schedule requires split consciousness.
More like a rub your belly and pat ur head trick.
Where different consciousness within you are trying accomplish different goals simultaneously.
First let’s break it down
- Verbal recitation (vachik Japa): spoken out loud for yourself and to fill your surroundings with it’s vibrations.
- Whispered recitation (upamsu Japa) : it is subtle and is only whispered so that it’s audible to yourself. It helps build and refine focus.
- Mental recitation (manasik Japa) : mantra is silently recited in the mind, requires deep focus, generates intense internal vibration.
- Effortless recitation (ajapa) : U don’t try to recite mantra here. You arrive here after mastering all the other layers of recitation. The mantra simply flows through U.
- Honourable mention : writing mantra ( likhit Japa) : helps build discipline, concentration , visualisation of the mantra and manifesting Intentions.
Your consciousness begins to split from the whispered recitation. You whisper the mantra so subtly that anyone sitting next to u can’t hear it. Whole being aware of your surroundings.
To jump into mental recitation from the get go might take some U some forcing to do.
Ur best bet to work on Ur chakras (clearing, strengthening, empowering ) with the help of mantras would require your to find some quite time regardless of how u do the mantra. And yes it would definitely work if U do it mentally. I do it every now and then.
All the best.
If you are able to hear the sound of each word you mentally pronounce, it will work.
Thinking isnt enough, you have to visualise your throat vibrating as if you physically said them.
