Core concepts in Magick

Another hello good people, I will appreaciate very much to have answers and suggestions for this topic

I have been looking for the beginner’s stuff on the internet and in forum, all I found was information that is scattered, almost all of them very interesting. One of the book recommendation for a beginner that I’ve found is The practical psychic self-defense handbook : a survival guide - by Robert Bruce, which I’m currently reading and I like it.

What I wanted to ask is are there core concepts in magic, that aren’t related to a particular tradition but are general, fundamental and if there are nice books that explore this, there is theory, what is what, why is it important, how is it applied, what can people to to you who have these knowledge and skills, and why…?(I’d like very adequate information, very rational, true, beautiful)

P. S. I have the book by Franz Bardon " Initiation into Hermetics", it contains very good practices, but since it’s related to Hermeticism, I quit reading and don’t think that I can just jump into a tradition and practice. I am such a beginner, I feel bad about this, and have no knowledge, not from sciences, not magic or witchcraft, just had a precognitive dream lately that fired my curiosity and now I feel overwhelmed by the amount of information scattered, with no clarity where is the beginning nor the end. I know I have to read different things to make up the puzzle, but also I want to know the core concepts so I know what belongs to where.

Thanks!

I don’t think there is any such thing. You can get people’s opinion on this within thier worldview and a given magickal tradition, but there’s no Unified Field Theory of Magick™ that all systems agree on. I think the underlying truth is all the same, but how they all describe it is different.

This is why we ask in the Intro what traditions people follow, so we can translate based on our own understanding of where they are coming from.

You are best of keeping on reading and you will distill out your own worldview based on what makes sense to you, what you try that works for you, and what you think about it.

If you can afford it, I think the absolute best place to start that will give you all you need to do magick and understand most other magick, is E.A.'s video courses on Mastering Omnipotence (manifesting), Omnipresence (astral travel) and Omniscience (divination).

They’re 50% off this month so that’s nice.

The difficulty of getting through the initial confusion is part of the process of learning about magic and how to use it. I’ve spent two years myself in that same state of research on theory, more books, more text to read, the occasional practice of sigils and whatnot, but at first yes; it’s all very confusing and little is explained especially if you immediately go into a tradition book with multiple rituals.

Authors use terms like evocation, invocation, current, higher self, the astral world, astral projection, chaos magic, LHP, RHP, trance states, and whatnot, but they are themselves rarely explained for a complete beginner. Fortunately this confusion fades away over time if you do put the time and effort into learning more about what you read.

Read and practice, compare, analyze, assess, frequently. Seek like you would try to discover a new land on earth, explore, test things.

If you do all of that it is only a matter of time before you manage to learn about those “core concepts” in magic. BALG itself is a very useful repository of knowledge that spans an entire decade from people from all walks of life.

Before BALG I didn’t knew anything about evocation (nor that it existed and was ‘real’) and now i’m at least slightly more knowledgeable to what it entails. Same thing for automatic writing, never knew what it was about until I tried it myself.

It’s a field of self-exploration, thus authors address other self-explorers. Those who do not use self-exploration are bound to be lost, that’s just part of the process and filter. Also a field that rarely spoon-feeds everything, because all knowledge of all domains is generally already accessible in one form or the other if one just looks around themselves. Oftentimes I find it compounds. Something you’ve read somewhere else pops back into your head in a “oh, right, I did read about this! i understand what it means now”. And curiosity to explore is also a good thing to have, of course.

The search bar will be your greatest friend, and a good deal of patience and open-mind and above all, trial-and-error.

tl;dr read more is the solution. Ignorance always precedes wisdom. :slightly_smiling_face:

If you find a truth in a tradition, it does not mean necessarily that it is not ´general’ at the core, you will find many recurring truths across different traditions, sometimes predating the very tradition explaining it, this is common,

If some scientists discover what a molecule is, it does not mean the molecule is somehow tied to those scientists, it is general, a molecule is a molecule it has always been there it was just discovered, It is general by definition. Thats how i personally view the spiritual knowledge,

I see many people refer to concepts generally and then expand on them using a specific traditions because stories can be fun or even make concepts easier to understand. Even if they do not believe in the tradition, they use it as symbolism. It is not always ´serious’. If i like a line in the bible because i resonate with it, it does not mean i am christian and i do not necessarily have to be a christian to like it.

Thanks everyone for replying!

Hands-on chaos magic by Andrieh Vitimus is great book for beginner. It’s made so you should do the exercises not just read it all and do nothing. Is good. when someone ask me irl how/where to learn I say go do that book then you will have real foundation

Typically go with beings which your intuition tells you to work with. After you understand who that is,read the books that are related with them. That’s it really.

you welcome man it give you everything from spellcasting, energ work and also evoke and invoke. I don’t know anyone talk about this book but I think it can make you have all the skills need to play anything in the occult. I hate to say but a lot is just nonsense but this book would give you practical basis and then you can go do what you want with whatever spirit or god or whatever. you could summon Goku if you wanted haha
