I’ve done a search on here, but don’t see much discussion about Clive Barker. How do you feel about his work? Do you think he has some occult background?
Not sure he does. In this interview he calls himself a “professional imaginer” and that his images “come from god”. I don’t see much in what I know of his work as inspired by the grimoiric tradition articulately, he’s very well read and draws from cultural myth and stories the world over.
I do think that in honouring the messages in dreams from his subconscious he helps make those stronger and more inspiration comes to him. It’s often said that authors create egregores or channel spirits that help the characters in the story 'take on a life of their own" as so many authors report. But most authors don’t frame that in an occult way.
Anyone here relate to movies directed by Clive Barker, he seems to be LHP or maybe RHP?
@Werb421 We already have this thread for discussing Clive Barker. Please use the search to avoid opening duplicate threads. I have merged this into this thread to continue the discussion.
You might be interested in the interview with him above.
There are also threads for the Hellraiser movies in particular.

Why do people feel the need to make famous writers and filmmakers into occultists just because they happen to use certain imagery? You do know the “occult” has been part of popular culture for decades, right? Hammer films of the 60’s/70’s practically created the modern Satanic aesthetic (and some modern LHPers literally look like Hammer villains lol).
I thik that that Magical Cube in Hellraiser which unleashes Hellish entities is something that most folk here can relate to.
The thing is, yes these horror fantasy authors create a mythos…but so did the guyswho wrote The Bible or The Koran so on. Who’s to say that Cthulu may become the dominant religion of humanity in the future? Why not?
The concept of a magical artefact originating from Hell is not new. Barker simply added a degree of S&M to it which was considered unusual for the time because that was considered and regarded with a degree of suspicion and interest at the time.
Not like today where the new generation are proudly flaunting their sexual quirks on TikTok/ Bluesky / Twitter as if their sexuality defines them.
With that said anyone with an imagination and semi literate skill in writing can write a novel. It doesn’t mean that there is a hidden meaning behind that. In fact becoming a best selling novelist flies in the face of the definition of occult.
I started this topic a couple of years ago because I love his films and didn’t really see much content about him on here.
That said, even though I am fascinated by his work, it seems clear, at least more recently, that he is at least influenced by RHP, especially with how he included so much in Scarlet Gospels.
