In your opinion, what are the basic “necessities” for an altar (specifically for a deity/demon/angel/etc that your working with). I know everyone’s altars are varied and Unique to each person, and their relationship with said being. However overall - what do you think are basic things most if not all altars should have to be well an altar.
Thank you. I’m asking because I have an altar to Lady Lilith. I had to kinda be creative (I’m on a budget to) so I want to know for personal reference. I like to do alot of art for Lady Lilith (depicting her in one way or another) that put I will put on her altar, + her sigil (for communication), an altar “cloth” (I need an actual one), 1-2 candles, among other things. So I’m just curious.
I think your intention is the most important thing with an altar. I don’t have a lot of space for multiple altars so I have a single altar dedicated to Queen Lilith and Lucifer. When I’m just trying to summon one of the deities [say I’m summoning Queen Lilith] I simply move the Lucifer statue over to the side and place Lilith’s picture in the center of the altar until the ritual is done. I think as long as you’re showing respect and doing your best to set up a proper altar the entities won’t mind.
With that said, some of the basic things I think you’d need for an altar would obviously be candles and a sigil at the very least. I also like to set up idols and icons to my deities. So I have an Idol of Lucifer and I have an image of Lilith. The idols might not be 100% necessary although I think you would want a hand drawn sigil at the very least.
If you want to get fancy you can add in ceremonial daggers, chalices, offering cups, incense, etc… etc… but these may not be 100% necessary depending on how you’re doing your invocations.
I do have some stones (moonstone) and other crystals I know she likes (based off research). I do also have inscence but I can’t burn it at the altar since the altar is indoors (I managed to set off my house smoke detectors once by doing this)
I don’t drink, nor do I buy alcoholic stuff. So I can’t do wine although I’ve looked into other foods/drinks she likes. The only wine at my house is cheap stuff and I’m not giving her cheap stuff.
if you can try to integrate the incense into a spray, or something similar, do that. I’m not sure if that’s even a thing, but look into spray on fragrance
I’m looking into the offering cups, I also heard that making your own idol of the diety can be better then a brought one. So I’m looking into maybe sculpting.
You can probably actually find a nice chalice from somewhere like Goodwill believe it or not. I have a beautiful pewter chalice that has a very “medieval” look that I found at a goodwill a few years ago and it only cost like a dollar. Also, if you could sculpt an idol to your deity that would be awesome. I don’t have that level of skill but if you do, more power to you! That would also add more intention and make your altar more powerful.
