Many people know the below documentary, Zeitgeist; but for who never had the chance to view it, it may be a good way to understand the roots of Christmas, and indeed the real pagan roots of that holiday.
As you may or you may not know, the sun stops to move to south every year by 22nd of December at least perceivably and stands at that pause for three days (dead for three days) and only by 25th of December it begins once again to move one degree but that time to North foreshadowing longer days, warmth and spring. That event was very important for people and it was celebrated as a festival even long before Christ.
