History of Magic by Kurt Seligmann and, if it doesn’t completely qualifies , I think my immediately next book has been Dolores Ashcroft Nowicki’s “The ritual magic workbook”.
GOM 72 Angels of Magick
It’s hard to say when I properly crossed the threshold. I swung sort of a weird arc from NDE’s to mediums to Seth, to Theosophy, a bit later to Manly P Hall’s Secret Teachings of All Ages, read some Steiner after that and I think I might have finally read something I solidly enjoyed when I picked up Meditations on the Tarot by Unknown Author (well not so unknown these days).
The first occult related book I actually purchased was The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage when I was around 10.
Bhagavad Gita and Liber Al …
Scott Cunningham’s Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner. My mother gave it to me when I was around 14.
Good old Cunningham. That takes me back
I still have it! All the RHP books my mother gave me I’ve held on to for sentimental reasons. It’s nice to be able to look at them and remember how I started down this path.
In order:
- Solitary Witch by Silver Ravenwolf
-Nocturnal Witchcraft by Konstantinos
- Simon Necronomicon
-Gothic Grimoire by Konstantinos
-Rites of Odin by… Conway I think?
These were my only physical copy occult/witchcraft books from ages 14-16. In that time period I acquired quite a few PDFs and such as well though so I wasn’t limited by them thankfully. Konstantinos was a big influence in my early magical practices until I started digging online for more.
First occult book that I actually bought
It was one of these I believe:
Musta Raamattu also known as 6th and 7th books of Moses
Wicca, a guide for solitary practitioner by Scott Cunningham
The first I read that I remember by title was probably A Treatise on White magic by Alice Bailey.
The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic by Eliphas Levi, simply because it was the most fancy looking book in the store and I was being edgy. I was 14. Tried to read it but it was way above my head and boring to me.
The first books I actually read were Northern Mysteries and Magic by Freya Aswynn or Teutonic Magic by Kveldulf Gundarsson… not sure which was first.
A Happy Pocket Full of Money
It gets deeper and more masterful as I do, truly a book for ascension. I’m understanding lessons from spirits it foreshadowed to me 12 years ago, it’s bitchin
Also, Advanced Magick For Beginners
Read these two and you’ll have much cooler questions and the ability to make truly any action magickal. My issue now is stifling constant gnosis and having everything be a spell. It’s as meta as it gets
The Encyclopedia of Wicca and Witchcraft when I was like 14-15
My first book was by Alan Chapman Advances Magick for Beginners. Back when I was around 20.
The God of the Witches. Margaret Alice Murray 1931. Exquisite woman. I was very young and I recall my hands shaking before i was done with the intro. Nothing was ever quite the same after that. Went back and read everything she ever wrote before and after.
My first occult book was “Elementary Treatise on Practical Magic” by Gerard Encausse (Papus), but I haven’t ever tried to do anything from it. Later I have found modern LHP works.
Pdf worths? Satanic bible by Anton S Lavey
Dreaming the Dark by Starhawk
In order, as my town’s library was very limited:
-Real Alchemy by Robert Barlett
-Practical Handbook of Plant Alchemy by Manfred Junius
-The Complete book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland
-A Witches Bible by Janet and Steward Farrar
-Nocturnal Witchcraft by Konstantinos
-Psychology and Alchemy by Carl Jung
The rest of that section of the library was mainly ghost sighting books if I recall correctly
Bucklands Complete Book of Witchcraft AKA Uncle Buckys blue book!!
I remember buying it from the only bookstore in my tiny town. I will always appreciate it for providing me with the fundamental skills and concepts of magick.
About a month after I acquired Uncle Bucks Blue Book, I found Aleister Crowleys “Book of the law” and “the book of lies”.
Then there was a whole phase of Silver Ravenwolf, which I appreciate for helping me first discover my clairsentience.
After her, it was Anton Lavey and the Satanic bible.
Then Konstantinos “Vampires: the occult truth” and “Nocturnal Witchcraft” which put me directly on the path to Black Magick. Konstantinos had a huge influence on me as a witch.
