Strength & Justice (8 or 11)..Some confusion…?

Greetings to All,

So on some of my tarot decks that I own, I have noticed a consistent discrepancy in the “Strength” card and the “Justice” card. On one deck I have the “Strength” card is number 8, and the “Justice” card is number 11. On other decks the “Strength” card is 11 and vice versa for the “Justice” card.
Am I missing something here?? Is this something having to do with the type of deck it is or a mis print?? Any input would be helpful. Thanks

Long story short: traditionally, Justice is the 8th Trump and Strength the 11th. However, A.E. Waite reversed those positions when he published the Rider-Waite deck, based on his understanding of astrological attributions. Crowley, who criticized Waite for this (among many, many other things), reverted to the traditional attributions in his Thoth deck.

So now any given deck may follow one attribution or the other, based on the philosophy of the designer (or, in many cases, they will simply blindly follow the Rider-Waite deck and change the pictures).

FWIW, I’ve used the traditional/Crowley attribution for the past 25+ years and never had an issue. On the other hand, I’ve known several readers who used the Waite attribution and were quite good, so I don’t think it matters all that much.

Interesting!! Thanks! Mine is Rider-Waite based. Seems to work splendidly, as well.

I use both RW and Thoth based decks and have not seen either deck be more accurate than the other in terms of divination.

Main reason those cards have been altered is due to the new Aeon. The Thoth Tarot is based on The Aeon of Horus. Also there is in fact no “Justice” card in the Thoth Tarot as the card is called “Adjustment” for good reason.

The old concept of justice is utterly corrupt and in the process of being wiped out.

Thank you to all for your input. To hJo, I’ll be sure to read those two links that you posted and comb through them!!!
