Shadow work or doing the inner work

I’ve been seeing this a lot, even heard it recently though I don’t recall through who.

I prayed for my roommate who is in a similar situation as mine. I got ahem’d and laughed at. Being “spiritual” must be the new atheism.

Okay, work on it with your choices. Forgive me for trying to help. I have my own self to work on.

Which brings me to the topic. What exactly goes on mechanics wise as far as doing the inner work or shadow work? What are toddler steps to grown ass steps in doing the work?

The “shadow” comes from Jungian psychology and is a term for the unconscious parts of ourselves that we generally ignore and repress die to societal conditioning. Anger, fear, sadness, hatred, rage, all the negative emotions we usually stamp down. Shadow work then is the process of learning to integrate these parts of the Self to become whole.

There are several ways to do shadow work, including hypnosis, CBT, and guided meditation, but the initial step is always to first acknowledge the shadow. Society tells us to plaster a smile on our faces and to ignore the “bad” feelings but to truly be a complete person, we need to understand they are a necessary part of us.

In the occult, some people use spirits to help with facing and integrating their shadow. Lilith is a popular choice as she has become the archetype for repressed feminine power and thus can be a guide to the parts of us we don’t want to face.

Nice, thank you for the response. A shaman friend of mine (she originally was from the Yukon area and a part of an indigenous culture there, later put up for adoption by her birth parents) told me I have a dark being attached to me. The dark being would howl “why not me?”.

My father once told me that I have an infernal spiriit attached to me. I suspected Ipos, but it very well could be my shadow self. I thought it was a horde of fae I awoke, and opened a portal for some to step through.

It’s always made me wonder how much my shadow self must despise me for what I’ve put it through.

NLP strikes me as the best solution. Thanks!

This makes sense. We unfortunately live in a world where many factors influence or affect our well being and our mood and mindset.

Thus we repress taboo feelings that society does not approve of. Unlike indigenous tribes worldwide that do work with and through their shadow selves and little to no repressed emotions.

I think guided meditation would be an effective key, along with NLP instead of hypnosis.

Thanks @DarkestKnight

Actually, I’d say that CBT is not really the psychotherapeutic modality best suited for shadow integration, I’d say to the contrary.

I would recommend psychoanalysis, and there are even plenty of old-school Jungians out there who can help communicate with your unconscious symbolically.

I, personally, am more of a Freudo-Lacanian, but being an occultist I do respect Jung.

This is part of where I was getting at, where in my journal or some other topic that I created, I have a handout or two from a former Therapy group, called the feeling wheel.

M idea was is that as an actor or actress has to be able to flip emotion at will, and be convincing about it, so too, this would be a great aid in being able to train the magician to flip their emotion at will.

this being said, and perhaps used after this ritual, I think I will do the slowest ritual first that was recommended to me.

Well, Jung was one of the first to talk about the esoteric and shadow work. Also dream analysis.

Personally, my therapy approach is a combination of Humanist and Behavioural.

Thank you @DarkestKnight … I will put your and @kiss-lamia-lilith recommendations to use. Daily to kickstart it all.

@Theoricus Use mine gradually following the dark moon cycle. Will help you ritualise the darkmoon and shadowself as gateways to eachother.

Awesome, good to know. Thank you!

@kiss-lamia-lilith will the ritual also tap into repressed masculine archetypes and acts related to thoughts that were repressed, via the name Samael perhaps?

Usually you would start with the feminine as its most likey the most repressed aspect of the male. Then move onto male later down the line. You can modify the ritual for samael later. I would wait and complete Lilith’s revelations first as it could take a long time, as im sure the feminine aspects have alot to say about being denied.
