I am a ceremonial magician, and for beginners, traditional invocation is generally safer.
Contrary to popular LHP belief, Invocation is NOT possession. The point of invocation is to take on the traits of the spirit you are invoking to improve yourself. You would invoke Horus or the Archangel Michael for more courage, for example, or Thoth for wisdom.
Invocation, done right, only allows as much of the spirit to come into you as you are capable of handling. Look up the Golden Dawn practice of Assumption of Godforms, or Crowley’s Liber Resh, which are daily invocations.
Demons are traditionally evoked in ceremonial magick because it was assumed that one should strive to be more like the angels and gods than like the demons, and that invoking demons was dangerous.
As a beginner, be careful what you read because because religious demonolators, those who worship demons like the author S, Connolly, use the same words but define them completely differently. To a demonolator, invocation means casually inviting the demon over for tea, and evocation means putting a gun to its head and demanding it show up.
