Depends on what method you use. They can be evoked to full physical appearance, but they can also just be an energy presence. It all depends on the method and how developed your clairs are.
About seeing and hearing them, it begins respectively with the mind eye and as thoughts. You can even use the black mirror of a touch screen phone, you stare for four to five seconds the face will fade and immediately another face will form there’s your spirit. This is poke runyons method.
