I’ve recently gotten into the idea of dreamwalking. Dreams are already something I’ve studied a lot, so this was a logical next step. From what I’ve learned so far, is that you need to have some connection to the person you are dreamwalking to. I did have a connection with this person, but that was about 6 years ago. We were tight back then, but who knows how much they’ve changed. Is my connection with them still valid enough to potentially dreamwalk to them?

Yes. Everyone you meet is connected to you energetically (that’s why cord cutting is often recommended to help someone move on from a relationship), so it should be easy enough to follow that thread, even after 6 years.
