Does it matter what material you use to make an Athame?

Thinking about making my own Athame out of lamb bones, I like the idea of it - I know there’s not a real answer to it, it all depends if it works.

I haven’t got any knowledge about athame’s and all I know is that it is used for ceremonial ritual purposes, still it may come in handy at some point. To be honest, I’m thinking about using it for curses.

All an “athame” is, is a blade consecrated for ceremonial/ritual purposes.

It can be made out of anything.

I don’t have one, but I admire you if you want to craft one as I suck at handicrafts. All the people I know who have that tool are like knife collectors (in my country we call all those things “cuchillos”, I don’t know if the word “dagger” would be more specific in English), as they buy more of those or are gifted more of those, and those are really epic looking knives

@DarkestKnight Thank you. :+1:

@MagusOfGamaliel At the moment I’m just cleaning the bones for 24 hours, I’m not too good at crafting myself so I’m going to take my time with it.

I’m going to take a look at those cuchillos already sounds cool, near future I’ll probably invest in a metallic knife.

“Cuchillo” is the Spanish for “knife”, if I had an athame, I would probably call it “el cuchillo” (the knife) as I do with the ones in the kitchen

You’re welcome. :slight_smile:

Always keep in mind that, while certain materials are said to have their own intrinsic magical properties (obsidian, quartz, etc) it is really the consecration of something that sets it apart and makes it truly special.

Man has used stone and bone for blades of all types since the beginning, so you could forge yourself a very effective tool with your plan :slight_smile:

These two pictures is of the Athame, it feels like a handle too. I do have a second bone that I will be turning into a wand. Right now, I’m just trying to decide what stones would be great for my magical workings, places to visit, shops I can order from.

I know this post is a little older, but holy moly! I have 300+ sheep and never even thought of this!!! Did you do another process after boiling? And how would you put stones on it? Very curious now!

And another thing: Don’t make yourself some beautiful looking, completely useless Magickal Knife - ‘Because I only use it for ritual…’ You have to able to physically kill with it, should you need to. I haven’t, but I could!

If it’s completely steel I’d wrap it in aluminium wrap and bury it for at least 24 hours. 15-30cms/ 6-12 inches. After that consecrate. One easy way is to sleep with in in your bed, under the pillow, etc. If it comes with a removable handle and you could be bothered, make a new handle. Whatever you do - are you listening to me? - don’t use a sword/knife with a synthetic/plastic handle. Get rid of non-natural materials at all costs.

Damascus covers alot of territory as far as knife steel goes. Its just a process of layered different steels with varying carbon contents and forge welding them together. You can get cheap Damascus made with cheap steel and it be gorgeous, but it won’t have the strength of good steel that Damascus is usually known for.

So for an athame, if you need pleasing aesthetics to really connect with your tools, go for it, but it doesn’t make any difference magickally.

Thank you so much Uncle-Al. I appreciate it and I’ll keep it in mind before I buy anything. Knives for ritual are something I know fairly well zero about, so I am curious (though I promise I am listening and will do as you said) about why one does not use synthetic/plastic handles?

I had an old dagger style knife I had from early teenage Years, some 20+ years, which I had been using for gardening. One day I cleaned it up and painted the handle black. Looks great now and as others mentioned it is all about consecrating you Athame and putting your intention into your tools

You never know, that may be a dangerous promise to keep.

Frankly it’s just a prejudice of mine because I have found that plastic(s) are hopeless for energy work, but great for keeping a talisman, sigil or Seal in before or after use, because plastics/synthetics block energies. If I’m holding a plastic/synthetic handle knife/sword it doesn’t work - for me. But I was schooled by grimoires, books and an old school rhp Magickal Order and have made mistakes.

If practitioners can use them, I believe that there are some really cute Harry Potter resin-moulded wands around.

I don’t promise anything lightly, I’m not nice enough for that.

It makes a lot of sense so thank you very much for taking that time to answer that. I appreciate it.

@AllyL

You just want to get rid of any left over flesh, especially the smell. I boiled it to get rid of the meat that was still attached to it and then I left it overnight in a salt bath. 2 months later it still smells funky so I washed it in alcohol, most of it is completely white now and the smell is still there, a little bit. lol

To put stones on it, I’d take a look at some videos on YouTube.

Mine is still incomplete because I can’t find a suitable size gemstone to go with it, so a plain old stone or steel blade may have to do.

You can use sap glue to attach stones to your Athame too.

I was using a knife I found on the sidewalk one day. Homelessness is kind of bitch- you end up losing more than your home. The knife is a memory now. I’ve been using lancets to draw blood for ritual, cutting myself with a knife always threw me into a hightened state of duress I felt wasnt suitible for spellwork.

I’ve been using a Krystaline Beamer for most my spellwork. The only caveat is that it will not project negative intentions, well and it wont be able to cut anything either but thats okay. It amplifys energies you place on it so I made a sheath for it. My wand now projects the frequencies of black tourmaline, the number 23, the color black, the color silver, hemp and Lucifer (on top of everything else it already projects ofc). Here’s a photo for ya.

I was hanging around a friend while she was having a pretty severe panic attack. I gave her my want to hold on to for a few minutes. She calmed down & told me she felt a lot better. I suspect it was the frequencies of helium that lifted her, hard to say. There’s a lot goin’ on there. This story took place before I made the sheath btw.

I would love to hear everyones thoughts on all this.

Thank you.
