Color of candles

I have noticed that many spells require different color of candles
What if I don’t get that specific type of candle
Can I paint that candle will that spell still work?

Generally, the colour of the candle is specific to the intention. Many systems of candle magick use colour correspondences so if you work with a spell that requires a certain colour, you will need that colour because the colour has an effect on you (it has been proven by research that colour elicits emotional reactions from people) and you power the spell.

Painting the candle is unlikely to work because your mind will know the candle is not really that colour, thus short circuiting your conscious intention.

However, most spells can be adapted to use a plain white or black candle, rather than a coloured one.

I want to perform a getting love back spell will white candles work?

Yes, you can substitute a white candle, though I’d try your best to get a red candle, or whatever the spell requires if you can.

Color corresponds with the type of spell and system of magic you practice. An example is an orange candle for Mercury; FYI Mercury is currently in retrograde.

I beleive white includes all colors while black excludes all colors, or I could have the colors mixed up there.

Something to keep in mind: magic, in terms of ingredients, has changed over the years with the expansion of available goods. You may find colored candles in spells in modern grimoires, but you will likely not in the older ones, as it was not available. So, I tend to take a more folk magic approach, by using whatever I already have on hand to use. It is rare that I actually purchase anything for magic. When I do, it is usually a special occasion or an offering if i do not have the means to make what i have decided to give. So far, it has been a more effective approach and less of a headache than when I started where i was over worried about using the “correct” ones. Unless you are working with spirits of the materials you are using and calling other spirits into play, the power behind the ritual is from you, as you are “God” in that moment.

So, my advice would be to sit down quietly and think about the spell. Do you feel like buying the red candle is necessary? Do you feel that painting the candle will help you to feel like you are a creator in that ritual, perhaps as a preparation ritual in itself? Do you think using a plain candle you have on hand will help eliminate the distraction of “doing it wrong” so you can focus on your goal? What direction do you want to go?

While magic is certainly focused on getting results and developing a skill, it is also a way to get to know yourself. So taking the time to understand you and how you think is important for any type of magic in my eyes. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Had a memory recall here, as a Neophyte in the Golden Dawn, you are to produce a red lantern. I found a garden lantern with a see through door, painted it red, and stuck whatever color candle in there. Point is, lanterns could be used as the symbolic color, while your candle etched and dressed is inside the colored lantern.

Hi ,
Ooh do love candle spells , like others have said
White candles are supposed to be great in the absence of the colour you need ( I’ve only ever used coloured candles before ) - but having thought about it painting the candle red could work to your advantage …as you could treat it in the same was as how you might dress your candle or anoint it with oil - im just guessing but in theory it may have the potential to add more of your will , intent and energy to the spell , it’s actually a great idea . Even the direction in which you paint it ( say from the outer edges towards the centre ) could work to draw something towards you and painting from the centre -to the outer edges of the candle could banish and draw something away from you .
Do whatever you need to do to get your mind to where it needs to be… then will you come back and tell us if it worked please , Im interested to see if you’ve stumbled upon a little piece of gold there .
Thanks  x
