Circles around sigils

Hi! This is a pretty basic question, though it has gnawed alot on my mind and I’ve looked elsewhere but without an answer so I thought I would give it a try and ask you guys.

As you all might already know, there are books with sometimes ALOT of different sigils in them, and some of the are presented with a circle around them, but some a presented without the circle. I don’t know if my memory fails me, but I think I read somewhere that EVERY sigil should have a circle around it. Then, why are some of them presented without? This is really confusing to me since my natural thought on the subject is that a sigil should just be painted as it is presented by the book, or in more advanced means, by the spirits or gods themselves. What are your thoughts and experiences regarding this?

A circle isn’t entirely necessary, do it however you want but circles can sometimes trap the energy of the spirit so keep that in mind.

As far as i know, a Circle is not necessary, But it can be used pretty much in the same way as a Magical Circle to condense, Focus and encircle the Energy of the Ritual(the Energy of the Sigil, in that case) and thus allowing the Energy to be directed more as a Powerful pointed Laser Beam and thus Helping in making the Result of the Ritual manifest quicker and stronger.

When I summoned forth a demon named Cohzier to assist me and some people in a group working earlier this year, he showed me his sigil with a circle (single, not doubled) around it.

From what I’ve read, the idea that the sigil is inside a circle with the name as well relates to the idea that the spirit is “bound” to this and must answer when compelled, which is the traditional grimoiric method and has religious underpinnings.

Modern demonolatry, afaik, shuns the use of circles, because it takes a completely different stance on how to conduct oneself around demons, and that’s caught on (maybe not just from this source) outside their paradigm into the wider field of black magick, being sometimes seen as a more “respectful” way to summon a spirit forth.

I would usually not use a circle, but when requested, I did - maybe you could dowse above the sigil after drawing it, asking the spirit to send their will through the pendulum - a circle for “Yes, draw one” and any other kind of movement for “No thanks”?

Thanks for all the answers!

This is very interesting because I’ve had connections with sigils both with single and double circles (with the name written in between) and without any circles at all. My experience so far is that it is not necessarily “easier” to connect with a sigil with circle, but I feel the connection better. It’s like it’s chained to a focused area of my mind, which also feels like a circle, and I’m spectating my own mind from above the circle in it. It’s very hard to explain, but all this info clear things up for me. I’m not the kind of person who is afraid of using sigils without circles. I think you get a stronger trust from an entity just by trusting it enough to interact with it without restraining it in any way. I’ll definitely try this dowsing technique out. Sounds great since I can’t hear spirits yet anyway.

Not to be pedantic, lol (sorry, couldn’t resist  ), but s Connolly says to use the circle. The circle, at least in her paradigm of demonolotry, represents the “all”, i.e., Lucifer. So essentially, you’re surrounding the sigil with the energy of Lucifer. Just putting that out there for the sake of balance, and not, you know, pedantry.

Fascinating… The strongest evocation I did so far was with king Paimon with a single circle around the sigil. I read somewhere on the forum that he is strongly connected to father Lucifer, and if the circle is Luciferian energy, maybe that strenghtened the ritual even more.
