Just watched the first episode and I must say it has lived up to its expectations and more. Absolutely astounding.
I am very surprised at how good this show is. Both because it seems like the sort of thing that would suck ass and because it’s on YouTube Red, of all things. It’s more than a worthy successor to one of the defining films of my generation; it’s better in a lot of ways.
I love what they’ve done with Johnny! And, of course, all of the flipping of the paradigms and whatnot. Really good!
So yeah I got YouTube red and binge watched the whole season. Hands down amazing series from start to amazing surprise ending. Wow just wow!
I gave my rundownb of what I think should happen in season 2 from a screenwriter’s perspective in the comment section feel free to go ahead and check that out. Cheers!
If you have not seen this amazing piece of pure LHP philosophy gold then…I just don’t know what to do with you.
I just watched the first episode.
I AM NOT PAYING FOR YOUTUBE RED! but i will steal the shit out of this series because it looks good.
There are other ways to watch the series. Also, the first 2 eps are free and you can do the free trial if you decide you want to finish the season.
Ah, fuck it, I’ll post this here. This is a post-that-quickly-escalated-into-a-review from my Facebook…
I’m 6 episodes in with Cobra Kai and…wait, you guys have heard of Cobra Kai, right? It’s a show on YouTube Red. You’ve probably seen ads for it. I have no idea who would want to pay for something that they’ve been using for free, for years. YouTube Red is weird…and an odd choice of platform for the show but I digress.
Cobra Kai is a proper sequel to the original Karate Kid, with Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprising their roles as Daniel-san and Johnny. It is a sequel worth waiting 30 years for, in my opinion; the show is way better than it should be.
Zabka is amazing. His portrayal of Johnny Lawrence as one of those dudes who became a washed-up nobody after high school is so good. He is surprisingly sympathetic, funny, and nuanced. The show really sets him up as the protagonist of the series, with Danny LaRusso being kind of a jerkface in the doldrums of middle age. Although, I would say there is no real villain in this story, or at least not when it comes to the grown-ups.
Kids will be kids, however, even in this modern politically-correct world of “asthma, peanut allergies, and all that made-up shit”, as Johnny puts it. And kids are fuckin mean!
This time around, Johnny’s jaded perspective is moved when he sees a neighborhood kid being the victim of bullies. Combined with a chance run-in with his old nemesis LaRusso, Johnny decides to reopen the old Cobra Kai dojo (complete with cheesy 80s logo) and teach the kid, Miguel, to “Strike hard, strike first, no mercy”.
It’s a good show! And nah, I ain’t paying for YouTube Red. There are - cough - other ways to watch it. I have heard that the first two eps are free, though, so you can get a taste.
I just did the first month free thing so I could watch it.
And strike hard, strike first, no mercy seems to have become my motto as well… I’m done with people bullying me, walking over me and thinking its ok…it’s not ok…
And I’m coming for them
Because you’re able to watch/listen to Youtube vids without the constant interruption of ads if you pay for it.
I’m loving my YouTube red and you broke cheap asses…
Lol JK I actually don’t do cable so I get most my news from YouTube. Also watching as free plus all the various series and shows I’m actually happy to pay a measly little 10 bucks a month I mean I spend more than that on espresso in a month.
I remember the days when YouTube had no advertisements on its videos and it was still free…
I never realised that
Ha that’s funny. Goofy 80s movie tunes. Being right at that target age of original I must admit the first two teasers totally have me contemplating buying it. It was quite good.
