The Future Of The Forum

Hello Friends,

We love the forum because it allows you good folks to hang out, discuss magick, and share experiences with ascent.

In the spirit of this, we would like to provide you the very best, most cutting edge technology to do so.

Yesterday, we completed a transfer of our databases and files from our previous host to a newer, safer, much faster host. For this reason, we lost comments posted between February 22-3. In our judgement, the transfer needed to occur and thus, frankly, the short-term loss was worth it for the sake of long-term quality.

Furthermore, over the next month we will roll out the best ‘forum’ and ‘community discussion’ software in the world, called Discourse. You can view a demo of it right here:

Have you ever heard of Stack Exchange? The co-creator of that, Jeff Atwood, has coded and designed this highly impressive Discourse software, which provides you many convenient and contemporary features that Simple Machines Forums do not provide.

No worries; a team of specialists will convert the content and user-accounts of this forum to the new Discourse forum. So, as far as I know, the transition into the new forum will occur smoothly with very little loss, if any.

As much as I like the quaint and classic look of this forum today, I personally do not see a future in the Simple Machines Forum technology, and believe it high time to upgrade to a much better and cooler software forthwith.

You can see more on Jeff Atwood here:

Familiarize yourself with Discourse here:

I kindly ask that you remain cheerful and helpful in this migration and we will do everything possible for it transpire smoothly.

Yours,
Timothy

Right on. The tech is pretty slick. I’m sure it’ll have all the analytics and all that fun stuff right out of the box.

The hard part is not losing all the great conversations and insight in this current incarnation of the forum. (a.k.a. data conversion)

Social media / oauth style login, that’s pretty cool for new users. One less account to remember. Hopefully we will be able to keep the username / password setup we have now.

Well here’s hoping you have a tech wizard in your back pocket.

Good luck with the transition.

Could you possibly allow members to delete their own topics/comments? Because I see a delete option on every post but when you click on it it says that’s not possible. I think it would be great if members had control over their topics.

I thought you could do that on all but your OP (opening post in a topic - BUT, you can still edit the subject line, and the post body)?

If you EVER want to delete something, hit me up via PM, it happens and I’m always here to help sort things out, IF other people have maybe put heart & soul into replying helpfully then I’ll do what’s possible to preserve their content, but remove whatever’s causing a problem.

Seriously though, just PM me, even if someone quoted a comment I haz post edit mojo, and can usually make things work out for everyone.
