Is there any methods of protection anyone prefers or can give me prior to or after placing a curse on someone so that nothing evil wreaks havoc in my life after. I have heard stories of people placing a curse and then their own life goes downhill afterward even though they are the ones who placed the curse.

A curse coming back on you to wreak havoc in your own life, falls under the spectrum of karma. Just convince yourself karma is not real and the power of your thoughts (thinking karma is not real) will automatically protect you from any negative effects coming back to you.
As I always say, thoughts and words are very powerful things!!!
