I have been reading Kingdom of Flames and I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this.
Do you always have to evoke the king of the kingdom to evoke the other spirits?
The simple answer is, no, you do not, unless you choose to follow the exact system of Kingdoms of Flame.
However, EA has the student call particular spirits from KoF in both Works of Darkness and Evoking Eternity without having to follow the hierarchy, so the spirits can be called using any working system of evocation.
Remember, the rules laid out in any grimoire only apply if you are following that particular methodology.

No, and I never did this. It is helpful to open the square first, then the sigil.

Is there a universal way to open the squares? I found that a bit confusing as well I must confess.

You would open the square in the same way you would open the spirit’s seal. Gaze into it until it starts to flash.
