The UC is a summoning circle. It does not really provide protection, though the spirit that is bound to it does help to ensure compliance from the summoned. I will generally draw another circle energetically around the UC, and EA has done the same in some of his older videos where he demonstrated the LBRP. It is not strictly necessary though; you can use the UC itself without adding anything else. I like the extra flourish of a circle casting though lol
