Besides witchcraft, or using hexagram rituals or zodiacal invocations, what exactly is it, and what does it entail to be proficient with it?

On Joy of Satan and by recovering www.spiritonline.com with the Web Archive (then going in the section concerning exactly “elemental magic”) are reported details. Something also on the mi3/Tomekeeper website about Direct Magick.
All of that is mental, energetic, but probably there is also an elemental magick using pebbles, physical water and fire…
Finally in Practice of Magical Evocation are listed spirits who teach the magickal use of elements. An undine helps finding the bodies of people who drowned, a gnome gives a powder which is almost like the philopher’s stone (but Bardon warns to not accept it) etc.
If you want to learn elemental magick, I highly recommend Jason Newcomb’s book The New Hermetics. It is entirely elemental based, and will give you a good idea of the kind of things it can be used for.
