because they dissolve the boundaries that keep the “ego” or “collective self (all previous memories and ideas)” from identifying and interacting and responding to the environment, essentially bringing the individual to transcend himself, beyond the self

It’s because you lose your shit and during your psychedelic existential crisis, it reveals to you at great lengths that your so called identity is no longer recognised in its own sense you ought it to be, you then submerge into the duality of things, you aren’t you anymore, you are then connected to everything else entirely including time and the atmosphere.
You are no longer yourself but only everything else around you. Ego death knocks you on your ass, it’s a new chapter written for the individual. The bliss like effects after ego death don’t last too long as well so you won’t wake up feeling refreshed like a newborn baby every single day… it’ll go away eventually.
The body may also believe ego death is death itself so if you have ego death from a psychedelic and then have closed eyed visuals of morbid, butchered bodies/macabre; this is normal. It’s the thought of death. This is the image of death. Don’t be alarmed.

“you lose your shit”, in terms of what?
You lose complete sense of the world around you and forget yourself entirely. Fragments of your identity fade away as you become suspended within space and time. It’s a bit hard to describe when I’m sleep deprived. The ego death brings such accolades but the process is an extremely heavy experience. It is not taken lightly because when it happens it always becomes uninvited, or least unexpected.
