Why look for people in the spotlight? There are far often far stronger beings that are unknown.

There were tons of ancient witches, sorcerers, shamans, and magicians that were never known to the public. The top often aren’t. For every great sage there were 50 immortal Buddha’s, and for every Gautama there were countless individuals who reached Buddha-hood who just didn’t share, hell even he almost chose to keep it to himself.

If you want something historical, go back to the times of the Cro-Magnon and find one of them who was a sorcerer.

Jack Parsons, for all his gifts, was entrapped and killed by himself more than anything else.
