At what point does the feeling of resistance (in action or thought) become a clear indication that the Black Magician is taking an inappropriate route to his desired end?
If reading a Grimoire becomes tedious and boring is it not a sign that this choice was made on the wrong precepts and another path should be explored?
How about actions toward getting a job or choosing to make contact with a spirit?
Is there a certain learning curve or period of malaise where the only indicator that you should continue is the promise you made to yourself to do so?
Will there be periods of trial in the pursuit of godlike powers where zero positive emotion like excitement or even fear will be present?
