it’s not elsewhere in the room, only when I get close to the altar

It sounds like your altar contains energy, probably from the workings, offerings and thoughts you’ve given to it, but it could be also from entities represented on it also.
I usually associate warmth with pleasant feelings like love, gratitude, appreciation etc, but if it’s uncomfortable or incredibly intense, you can banish or clear the space specifically that the altar is in 
As long as it doesn’t bother you, it’s a sign your clairsentience is noticing energy, so nothing to worry about.

I would say it’s a sign of yang energy coming from the altar.
From here, use your hands to feel around the space, always keeping them moving as they also emit energy and the movement keeps you feeling the alter energy not your own. Pay attention to any impressions, ideas, flashes of thought or images that come to mind. You may get leads to look into further.
